BBC Awards for World Music 2006
Powur to the ppl [][] . De BBC World Music Awards werd onlangs aangekondigd. Dit jaar opvallend veel Desi's/Desi muziek dat genomineerd staat in de verschillende categorien. Hieronder een kort overzicht.
Culture Crossing:
• Asha Bhosle & Kronos Quartet
A marriage made in heaven? That's one way to describe this extraordinary collaboration between the ubiquitous San Francisco-based string quartet and the Queen of Bollywood filmi (film music).
Sawhney has produced such a staggering array of work and his interests seem so broad and deep, that you can only wonder at the filtering system that operates in his restlessly creative mind.
• M.I.A
M.I.A.'s life story has already been the focus of much British media attention but if you missed the hype here it is: born in Sri Lanka, she relocated to a West London council estate as a child after her father left the family to found a Tamil revolutionary party (read "terrorist organisation" to the Sinhalese majority).
Algerian-born DJ Cheb I Sabbah mixes up heady Arabic and Indian sounds into a sitar, tabla and oud tinged groove that is proving popular across Europe and the USA.
• Susheela Raman
Born in Hendon to a Tamil family who emigrated to Australia when she was four, Susheela's journey to her Tamil roots and a home in the British countryside is a truly contemporary story of migration, music and planting roots all over the world.
